A story of fragility and rebirth, told through the poetry of animation. “Luce tra i frammenti. Il viaggio di Mira, dalla scoperta della malattia alla speranza con CAR-T” is a 2D animated short film created by students from the BA in Film and Animation at NABA’s Milan campus, under the expert guidance of lecturers Malina De Carlo, Simona Duci, Giacomo Manzotti, and Jacopo Martinoni. A project of great significance for the Academy, it was developed in collaboration with Gilead Sciences, a California-based biopharmaceutical company, and endorsed by two key organisations in the fight against haematological diseases: AIL – Associazione Italiana contro le leucemie-linfomi e mieloma, and La Lampada di Aladino ETS.
The protagonist of this moving story is Mira, a master glassmaker who, with the support of her daughter Marta, faces one of the toughest challenges life can bring: a diagnosis of blood cancer. Told with great delicacy and authenticity, the short film retraces Mira’s patient journey – from diagnosis to treatment and, finally, to remission – allowing the viewer to experience firsthand the complex emotional path faced by someone living with such a diagnosis.

Through Mira’s eyes, the viewer is drawn into a whirlwind of powerful emotions: fear, anxiety, expectations, and uncertainty about what the future may hold. The story moves between real and perceived obstacles, between tangible difficulties and inner struggles, until a turning point is reached – the possibility of a cure through an innovative new therapy that reignites hope.
“Luce tra i frammenti” builds its visual and symbolic identity around a key element in the story: glass. Not only the protagonist’s tool of trade, but also a powerful metaphor for the human condition in illness, as revealed by the short film’s narrator:
"Like glass, we are fragile and transparent, but also strong and reflective in the light of hope."
Glass thus becomes a representation of the physical and psychological vulnerability, as well as emotional transparency, of a patient facing such a destabilising diagnosis – but also of their resilience, their ability to withstand pressure, confront adversity with courage, and reflect a light filled with hope.
