NABA's participation in Upside Down-Urban Postcards G0081: students’ involvement

As part of the collaboration between NABA's Rome Campus and Industrie Fluviali, four academy students - Erica Graziani and Anna De Toni from the BA in Painting and Visual Arts (link), and Giuseppe Abbisso and Gaia Cuomo from the BA in Graphic Design and Art Direction (link) - had the opportunity to contribute to the creation of "Upside Down-Urban Postcards G0081." This monumental, permanent public artwork was created by the artist Giulio Vesprini on the Ponte della Scienza - Rita Levi Montalcini.

The project, curated by Industrie Fluviali, was conceived and designed by Pingo – Società Cooperativa Sociale Integrata and promoted by Roma Capitale - Assessorato alla Cultura. It is also the winner of the biennial Avviso Pubblico "Estate Romana 2023-2024," curated by the Dupartimnento delle Attività Culturali, and realised in collaboration with SIAE. Furthermore, it is part of the WIDE. Art Based Spots programme, a significant creative laboratory that began in the summer of 2022, curated by Industrie Fluviali, during which Italian and international artists create site-specific works.

NABA's participation in Upside Down-Urban Postcards G0081: the project

The artwork by Giulio Vesprini, an ambitious ground painting which our students helped to create, connects the VIII and XI Municipalities. It was realised between June 20 and 23 and inaugurated on the 27 of the same month. “Upside Down-Urban Postcards G0081” stems from a reflection on the landscape in which it is situated: viewed from above, each of its elements aligns perfectly with the underlying river environment, as if the bridge were a lens through which to observe the scenery composed of the river, vegetation, and embankments. The plants become rounded geometries, and the river becomes the very idea of water, blue and luminous. Nature reclaims its space but shares it with the community that inhabits it, allowing the community to rediscover the importance of the Tiber, which too often goes unnoticed.
