The Academy is proud to announce the extraordinary presence of NABA alumni in this year’s edition of the Venice International Film Critics’ Week. Among the 7 projects selected for the SIC@SIC award (Short Italian Cinema @ Settimana Internazionale della Critica) 3 are presented by the alumni of the BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts.
“Where the Leaves fall”, the final project by Xin Alessandro Zheng, who graduated in June 2020, “Accàmora (In this moment)” by Emanuela Muzzupappa, who graduated in 2018 and “J’ador” by Simone Bozzelli, who graduated in 2017.

According to Vincenzo Cuccia, Course Leader of the BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts, the presence of an amount of 3 directors competing for the Short Italian Cinema award confirms the value of a study path that aims at laying the foundations for the development of universal narratives and a mature use of cinema’s language, starting from the personal and unique experience of its students.

“Where the Leaves Fall”, the graduation short movie by Xin Alessandro Zhengdirector screenwriter and editor, created in collaboration with the students Lorenzo Lorenzini, producer, and You Guolin, cinematographer, tutored by the director and lecturer of the BA Marianna Schivardi, tells the story of a second-generation Italian-Chinese young man, who travels to his hometown to bring there his father’s ashes, in an audiovisual reflection upon displacement.

Emanuela Muzzupappa explores her homeland as well in her short movie “Accàmora (In this moment)”, blending the contemporary language of a twenty-four years old author to the personal and collective experiences of Calabria’s inhabitants. Simone Bozzelli has been selected for the second time at the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, with the short movie J’ador”, which follows 2019’s “Amateur” and the writing and directing of several short movies presented in many international film festivals.

Since 2016, the Venice Critics’ Week presents SIC@SIC (Short Italian Cinema @ Settimana Internazionale della Critica), a selection of seven short films by Italian directors who have not yet embarked on a full-length film, all screened in world premiere competing for Best Short Film, Best Director and Best Technical contribution award. The programme aims at supporting the development of new Italian cinema and promoting young filmmakers.
