The young couple walking hand in hand, the waitress, the career woman, the tourist, the street artist, the commuter, the child eating ice cream, the bold fashionista, and the classic eccentric figure known across the city: these are the iconic figures that animate Milan, the fashion capital, reimagined by students from the Set Design Area in ten stunning outfits made using highly unconventional materials.

Part of the “A Pocket Full of Milan” collection, the outfits were created for Intergraf – a Brussels-based trade association that promotes and protects the interests of the European graphic industry, representing 22 member federations from 21 European countries – on the occasion of the corporate event “Intergraf The Currency + Identity”, held on March 5 at the Allianz MiCo – Milano Convention Centre.

The event brought together over 900 professionals from all over Europe, offering a remarkable stage for our students, who showcased their creations during “The Currency + Identity Défilé”.

What made the ten outfits created for Intergraf truly unique were not the fabrics, textures, or colours, but the unconventional materials used to make them – copper wires, shaped lenses, coins, whole and shredded banknotes, passport and ID card samples, polycarbonate pieces, optical filters, thermoplastics, and much more – all donated by companies affiliated with Intergraf and present at MiCo.

The result? A curious ensemble designed to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of the security printing sector and its products, while also telling the story of a cosmopolitan city. “A Pocket Full of Milan” stages the creative potential of the extraordinary materials that define the currency and identity sectors, showing how security printing products are part of the daily lives of people of all ages, genders, and professions.

The visionary creations of BA in Set Design students for Intergraf: the outfits of the young couple, the waitress, and the fashionista

The young couple embodies Milan’s romantic spirit through outfits that reinterpret everyday life using unexpected materials. The girl wears a skirt made of Banque de France banknotes, while her accessories – including jewellery and a hairband – feature fragments of Louisenthal banknotes and polycarbonate cards. The boy completes the look with a Portals white paper shirt and a symbolic bouquet made from mixed materials.

The waitress, an emblematic figure of Milan’s restaurant scene, wears trousers decorated with Landqart banknotes, an apron in Red Bridge fabric by Mativ, and a bowtie made of Bundesdruckerei GmbH banknotes. A playful detail? The chips on her tray, recreated using Portals copper wires. The fashionista, symbol of Milan’s bold style, mixes luxury with experimentation. Her dress is made of Bundesdruckerei GmbH banknotes, while accessories include a necklace of Banque de France seals and a shopping bag combining Schwarz Druck GmbH diplomas with Banque de France banknotes.

The visionary creations of BA in Set Design students for Intergraf: the outfits of the commuter, the career woman, and the child with ice cream

The commuter, always on the move between appointments, wears a hat combining shredded Louisenthal banknotes, pink recycled paper, and shaped lenses. Her top incorporates Inorcoat coins, while a Red Bridge leather bag with a copper button adds a distinctive touch. The career woman, a symbol of elegance and determination, stands out in a tailored suit embellished with shaped lenses, a briefcase made from Portals copper wires, and jewellery crafted from Inorcoat coins.

The child with the ice cream, happy and carefree, wears a poncho made from large Begum Paper Louisenthal banknotes, a hat in Cetis passport paper, and holds an ice cream made from pink recycled paper.

The visionary creations of BA in Set Design students for Intergraf: the outfits of the tourist, the street artist, and the eccentric character

The tourist, always ready for adventure, wears a shirt in Security Fibres UK Limited fabric, a skirt in PaperProtect fabric by IAI Industrial Systems B.V., and carries a bag made of shredded Louisenthal banknotes and Cetis materials. Her must-have camera? Created with Magnifiers Exhibitor Regular lenses.

The street artist, a constant presence in Milan’s piazzas, expresses creativity through a hat in Kurz/Luxoro fabric, a collar decorated with Kurz/Luxoro foil rolls, and buttons made from Exhibitor Regular optical filters. Finally, the eccentric character, with an unconventional sense of style, wears a cloak made from fabrics by Kurz/Luxoro and Schwarz Druck GmbH, while a Louisenthal cotton wig enhances their extravagant personality. The finishing touch? A pigeon recreated using shredded Banque de France banknotes.

A one-of-a-kind project, a bold display of creativity that goes beyond boundaries.

Virtual Production

Virtual Production is the innovative technology that creates digital visual effects on set, using software born for videogames development. The Virtual Set -made in NABA Milan Campus from May 3rd to 7th 2021 - was the scenario for the filming of two short movies, result of the collaboration between students, lecturers, and technical partners. The initiative is part of a path that begins from the fields of expertise that characterise the BA’s specialisations (VFX, 3D Design, and Game Development), revolving around contemporary multimedia and digital production with great attention to experiments in the VR, MX, and Virtual Production fields.
