NABA announces its participation in the Milano Film Fest, taking place from June 3 to 8, 2025. Under the artistic direction of Claudio Santamaria (renowned actor, director and screenwriter), this first edition of the festival—conceived by the Fondazione Milano Film Fest, which brings together four Milan-based organisations (Il Cinemino, Esterni, Fondazione Dude, and Perimetro)—celebrates the many faces of the audiovisual world, from cinema and TV series to photography and special content. From June 3 to 6, the programme will focus on Milano Film Fest Academy, developed in collaboration with major academic institutions in the field, offering thematic masterclasses led by faculty members and key industry figures, hands-on workshops, round tables and networking opportunities.

NABA will contribute to the festival with the screening of three short films, two public Masterclasses, and a roundtable featuring the screening of a documentary produced at the Academy, showcasing its multidisciplinary approach to the audiovisual world within this new city-wide creative hub.

NABA at the Milano Film Fest: short film screenings

The first event featuring the screening of three NABA short films will take place on June 3 at Anteo Palazzo del Cinema(Piazza Venticinque Aprile 8, Milan), starting at 10:30 AM in the Sala President. The three films were created by NABA Alumni and all received awards in past editions of the NABA Cinema Awards:

  • “Maieti”, a thesis project by Daniele Caruso and Matteo Boscolo Gioachina, Alumni of the BA in Film and Animation, winner in 2023 of the Best Short Film Award in the ONDE CORTE – PANORAMA ITALIA section of Alice nella Città, an independent and parallel section of the Rome Film Fest dedicated to debuts, talent, and new generations.
  • “At least I will be 8 294 400 Pixel”, the thesis short film by Marco Talarico, also an Alumnus of the BA in Film and Animation, winner of the Best Technical Contribution Award – Fondazione Fare Cinema within SIC@SIC 2024 | Settimana Internazionale della Critica.
  • “Dòma” by Chiara Seveso, Alumna of the BA in Film and Animation, selected in 2022 for Alice nella Città.

NABA at the Milano Film Fest: the Masterclasses

As part of the Milano Film Fest, NABA will also present two Masterclasses open to the public. The first, titled Bestiari, erbari, lapidari”: l'approccio autorale al cinema e agli archivi, will take place on June 5 at 4:30 PM in the Sala Panoramica of the Castello Sforzesco (Piazza Castello, Milan). The event will feature filmmakers and NABA lecturers Martina Parenti and Massimo D’Anolfi, in a conversation moderated by Marianna Schivardi (NABA BA in Film and Animation lecturer), focusing on their distinctive approaches to cinema and archival material.

The discussion will revolve around their most recent production, presented at the Venice International Film Festival, awarded Best Directing at IDFA, and exhibited at the MoMA in New York. Bestiari, Erbari, Lapidari” (2024, Luce Cinecittà) is an “encyclopaedic” documentary divided into three acts, each centred on a single subject: animals, plants, and stones. The film is a tribute to these “unknown” and, in some ways, alien worlds — a sentimental journey through culture, science, and art across our old continent.

On June 6 at 4:30 PM, again in the Sala Panoramica of the Castello Sforzesco, the event will continue with the Masterclass Virtual Filmmaking with Unreal Engine 5 led by Giovanni Visai (NABA BA in Creative Technologies lecturer). The session will focus on the use of the popular game engine in film production, exploring its applications beyond gaming. Later the same day, in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan, a round table will take place at 6:00 PM in the Sala Rubino of Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, centred on the theme of cinema, communication and sustainability. The event will include the screening of “Tempesta, a documentary created by students and Alumni from the BA in Cinema and Animation, recounting the violent storm that hit Milan in July 2023. Speakers will include Vincenzo Cuccia (NABA Media Design and New Technologies and Set Design Area Leader), Patrizia Moschella (NABA Communication and Graphic Design Area Leader), Marianna Schivardi (NABA Lecturer), Stefania Carbonara (NABA Media Design and New Technologies Academic Specialist), along with NABA students and Alumni Talita Diatto, Matteo Nacci, Giulia Mancassola, Federico Ruggieri, Marco Talarico and Elena Grandi, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Green Spaces

The Academy will also be present with an exhibition corner at the Castello Sforzesco from June 4 to 6, and will take part in the Stati Generali del Cinema Indipendente 2025, part of the official programme of the Milano Film Festival, taking place on June 4 at Anteo Palazzo del Cinema. NABA, participating as an official partner in collaboration with AIR3 – Associazione Registi Italiani, will contribute to the audiovisual coverage of the entire day and present the thematic panel NABA presenta: imparare a fare, formazione e innovazione in Accademia. Speakers will include Simone Bozzelli (Academy Alumnus and director), Marianna Schivardi (NABA lecturer), Michele Aquila (MAs in the Media Design and New Technologies Area Course Leader), and Emanuele Lomello (NABA Media Laboratory Manager).

NABA at Vertigo Film Festival

Lezioni di Ginnastica by Gabriele Lippi and Pharmakon by Clara Rancatore, both students of the BA in Film and Animation and winners of the 2025 edition of the NABA Cinema Award, have also been selected for the Vertigo Film Festival. The sixth edition of the international short film festival that brings to Milan short stories from around the world—inviting audiences to dream, reflect, share and connect—will take place at BASE Milano from July 3 to 6.
