NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti is proud to announce that the project "Disobedience Archive (The Zoetrope)" curated by Marco Scotini, NABA Visual Arts Department Head, has been invited to take part to the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, central event in the art world titled "Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere," curated by Adriano Pedrosa and open to the public from Saturday, April 20 to Sunday, November 24, 2024. The students from the Master of Arts in Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies of the NABA campus in Milan and Rome are the authors of the texts dedicated to the artists, under the supervision of the Academy’s Visual Arts Area faculty. NABA will also be present at the Italian Pavilion, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, curated by Luca Cerizza with Massimo Bartolini’s project "Due qui / To Hear", both NABA lecturers, with the schedule of events "IF ONLY WE HAD EARS", the Public Program that accompanies the national representation curated by Cerizza in collaboration with Gaia Martino, NABA lecturer, involving students from the Academy’s Visual Arts Area.

“Disobedience Archive (The Zoetrope)

Conceived in 2005, “Disobedience Archive” is a multiphase, mobile, and evolving video archive that concentrates on the relationship between artistic practices and political action. The project functions as a "user's guide" to social disobedience generating an atlas of contemporary resistance tactics  - from direct action to counter-information, from constituent practices to bio-resistance  - encompassing hundreds of documentary elements spanning decades. “Disobedience Archive” transforms each time into a dynamic and generative device, without ever assuming a final configuration. For the Biennale Arte 2024, within the Corderie, “Disobedience Archive” embodies “The Zoetrope”, the pre-filmic machine that animate images, investigating the representation of movement and giving rise to a centrifugal space. On this occasion it presents two new macro sections including forty films: “Diaspora Activism” deals with transnational migration processes in the context of hegemonic neoliberalism as a struggle that drives new ways of inhabiting the world and questioning the very meaning of citizenship; “Gender Disobedience”, in continuity with the previous section, is dedicated to nomadic subjectivities, conceived as a rupture of heterosexual binarism, and gathers the alliances between activism that critiques capitalism and the LGBTQ+ movements that have emerged globally.

Disobedience Archive (The Zoetrope) is a project by Marco Scotini, NABA Visual Arts Department Head, realised with Arnold Braho, project assistant, coordinated by Andris Brinkmanis, NABA Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Visual Arts Course Leader, and with the visual concept development by Lilia Di Bella and Chiara Figone of Archive Appendix. The texts dedicated to the artists have been written by the students of the Master of Arts in Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies from the NABA campus in Milan and Rome.

The Public Program “IF ONLY WE HAD EARS” of the Italian Pavilion – Biennale Arte 2024

The NABA presence also continues at the Italian Pavilion. A big installation to be heard: this is the concept behind "Due qui / To Hear", the project by artist Massimo Bartolini curated by Luca Cerizza, NABA Visual Arts Area lecturers, for the Italian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024. In this context, within the Tese and the Giardino delle Vergini, at the Arsenale, the appointments of the Public Program "IF ONLY WE HAD EARS" will take place, curated by Cerizza in collaboration with Gaia Martino, NABA lecturer. The program gives the word, voice, and sound to the human, social, spiritual, and ecological perspective suggested by the exhibition project, taking as its starting point the listening, understood as a relationship and understanding of oneself and other human and non-human subjects. Conferences, conversations, musical performances, and lectures with the participation of international and Italian guests will focus on this theme, creating a schedule of 4 weekends of afternoon appointments between May and September, with the goal of investigating a particular aspect of listening.

The schedule also includes workshop moments dedicated to the classes of NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Visual Arts Area and of the Università luav di Venezia, protagonists of a significant collaboration with the Italian Pavilion for research and teaching, aimed at understanding active attention, sound ecology, the politics of listening, and the possibilities of generative exchange with sound in the technical, human, creative, and meditative dimensions.

Finally, NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti will also be present as a donor of the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.
