Andris Brinkmanis

Course Leader of the BA in Painting and Visual Arts


Andris Brinkmanis is an art critic and curator of Latvian origin, based in Milan and Venice.

He joined NABA’s faculty in 2009 as a lecturer in art history and curatorial studies. Since 2013, he has served as the course leader of NABA’s BA in Painting and Visual Arts.

Brinkmanis has collaborated with magazines and publications such as Corriere della Sera, alfabeta2, Arte e Critica, Flash Art International, Monument to Transformation, and Studija. He is the international editor of bookzine No Order: Art in a Post-Fordist Society.

He curated Learning Machines—Discourses, NABA’s international seminar on artistic education and the alternative production of knowledge (with guests F. Verges, T. Rollins, and  E. Weizman). He was part of the On Art Education program at Documenta 13, together with Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri, and has participated as a reader in Documenta 13’s readings program.

In 2015, Brinkmanis curated a conference dedicated to Latvian theatre director Asja Lacis and philosopher Walter Benjamin, called “Leftist Ideas in Culture: The Password ‘Asja’” and held at the Academy of Culture in Riga, Latvia.

From 2008 to 2015 he collaborated with the Gianni Colombo archive in Milan. He has contributed to many exhibitions, including Gianni Colombo at Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, curated by Marco Scotini and Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, 2009–10; Ambienti, Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, 2009; and numerous other shows in major museums around the world.

He curated the recent exhibitions Albanian Trilogy: A Series of Devious Stratagems by Armando Lulaj (in the Albanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, 2015, with Marco Scotini); Disobedience Archive (The Park, SALT, Istanbul, 2014); From Memory to Matter (Quartiere Umanitaria, Milan, 2013); and other exhibitions in Riga and Tallinn.

Brinkmanis also collaborated with the Estonian, Latvian, and Central Asian Pavilions at the Venice Biennale from 2007 through 2013. He is an assistant curator of Marco Scotini’s itinerant project Disobedience, an ongoing video archive exhibited around Europe and the United States.

His research is centered on alternative education and the relationship between education and visual culture.
