On September 22, 2025, during Milan Fashion Week S/S 2026, NABA hosted a day of events dedicated to research and experimentation in the fields of fashion and design, transforming the Milan campus into a hub of ideas and creative exchange.

The programme featured two complementary initiatives. On one side, the third edition of SHOWROOM – DESIGNERS & MAKERS, an event open to the public and industry professionals, where students from the MA in Fashion Design and in Textile Design presented the collections developed at the end of their academic path. In parallel, from 11.00 AM to 4.30 PM, classroom G04 of the Academy hosted “Tinto di blu. Agrivoltaico ed erbe tintorie, in viaggio tra energia, moda e innovazione”, a symposium born from the collaboration between NABA and Repower, with the contribution of the University of Milan – Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Officina del Colore Naturale.

The initiative with Repower, a public study day, focused on a theme of growing relevance in the fashion sector: the application of agrivoltaics to the cultivation of dye plants – in this case, woad (Isatis tinctoria) and Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), from which indigo dye is extracted, a pigment rich in meaning that symbolically represents the encounter between innovation and tradition – and their potential use in natural dyeing applied to textiles and fashion.

“Tinto di blu. Agrivoltaico ed erbe tintorie, in viaggio tra energia, moda e innovazione”, the project involving students

The cultivation project of dye plants in Castelguglielmo, Northern Italy, within a Repower field, was carried out in different phases – starting from the experimental one, during which dye plants were grown under various thermal and light conditions, revealing that Persicaria tinctoria appears to be the most resilient. After harvesting the plants, the students focused on extracting the indigo pigment, from maceration in water to the addition of oxygen to bond indacane molecules and form indigotin, up to the addition of slaked lime required to give weight to the colour for its final formation.
