NABA at the 79th Venice International Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival

NABA and the film industry are forging an ever closer bond. After the participation of alumnus Davide Palella at the Locarno Film Festival, Federico Di Corato - lecturer and former student of the Academy - presents his short film at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in the Orizzonti section. "Manuale di cinematografia per dilettanti - Vol. I" will be screened for the audience at Sala Giardino on September 9, at 5:00 PM. The next showings will take place at the Sala Volpi on the same day at 9:30 PM and at the Sala Casinò on September 10 at 9:00 AM.

The short film by NABA lecturer and former student in the Orizzonti section at Venice

At the time of the fascist era in Italy, a wealthy and unknown man captures the world through his small movie camera. A handbook guides and instructs him, but the germ of ideology is behind the book's apparent technical objectivity. Nevertheless, some signs of ineffable resistance still appear in the filmmaker's images.

"Manuale di cinematografia per dilettanti - Vol. I" looks at Augusto Gandini's production - an amateur videomaker shooting between 1927 and 1942 - in the light of research on manuals for amateurs during the fascist era.

Written and directed by Federico Di Corato, the film was produced by ENECEfilm and Lab 80 Film. It was born during the second edition of Re-framing Home Movies thanks to footage coming from the Augusto Gandini Fund (1927-1942) and collected by the Cinescatti Archive of Lab 80 Film. The "Conseil à l'écriture pour les projets documentaires" of the French association Vidéadoc also supported the project. The production involved the artist Sara Galli, who took care of the graphics and animation. Enrico Gabrielli composed the soundtrack for the recording series 19'40''. Executive production is by Tommaso Perfetti, editing by Guglielmo Trupia and sound design by Giulia La Marca.

The short film at Locarno and the workshop for filmmakers

The showings of Federico Di Corato's short film in Venice bring the Academy to international film festivals, but they are not the only ones. At the beginning of August, the alumnus Davide Palella's short film was part of the Pardi di domani section at the Locarno Film Festival. "Sonnenstube" is a fresco of Sergio Cortesi's life and scientific research - the Swiss astronomer and former Locarno Specola Solare director who devoted his life to observing the Sun. The short film - produced with the support of the Ticino Film Commission and the Majid Foundation - was shot during the "Let's make something!" workshop curated by director Michelangelo Frammartino (who also teaches at the Academy) and supported by CISA - Conservatorio Internazionale di Scienze Audiovisive. Both Federico Di Corato and Davide Palella studied in NABA. They attended the BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts, which will evolve into the BA in Film and Animation in the Milan and the Rome* campus from October 2022.
