NABA proudly presents "Fashion & Antiquity," an initiative in partnership with the Museo Nazionale Romano (MiC) and the Department of History, Anthropology, Religions, Art, and Performance at Università Sapienza di Roma. This project, originating from the creative vision of curators Alessio de’ Navasques (a NABA lecturer) and Stéphane Verger, and supported by the academic contributions of Romana Andò and Colomba Leddi (Fashion Design Area Leader at NABA), encompasses five days (from November 27th to December 1st, 2023) dedicated to exploring the relationship between fashion and antiquity in the contemporary times. The comprehensive agenda includes a symposium where researchers from both academic communities will gather to engage in discussions centered around the theme of the project, featuring NABA lecturer Alessandro Manzi, and three workshops open to NABA students (especially those enrolled in Master of Arts in Fashion and Costume Design) and students from the SARAS Department at Sapienza University of Rome.

Scheduled for November 27, 28, and 29, 2023, the workshops will be held at the Museo Nazionale Romano and will be led by Judith Clark (Fashion and Museology lecturer at the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, and co-founder of the Center for Fashion Curation), Marco Pecorari (PhD. and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Program Director of the Master in Fashion Studies at The New School Parsons Paris), and Jan-Jan Van Essche (Designer), in collaboration with the staff of the involved institutions.

“Building Classical Ideals: Recognising the Gods through their attribute”

Organised by Judith Clark, the workshop “Building Classical Ideals: Recognising the Gods through their attributes” will take place at Palazzo Altemps (Piazza S. Apollinare 46, Rome) on November 27 and 28. During the session, students will examine the attributes of beauty, power, and sexuality inherent in the sculptures exhibited on location, with the aim of creating new ones during the workshop. The students will finally set up at Palazzo Altemps an exhibition dedicated to the new attributes, which will be open to the public on November 28 from 4 PM to 6 PM.

“Timeless Shapes and Constructions of Handwoven Garment Making”

The second workshop, “Timeless Shapes and Constructions of Handwoven Garment Making”, by Jan-Jan Van Essche, will be held at Terme di Diocleziano (Viale Enrico de Nicola 78, Rome) on November 27 and 28. It will allow students to admire examples of linear-structured clothing and discover techniques for treating fabric and conceptualising shapes. Participants will then be invited to create their own models, crafting garments that experiment with form. Finally, they will organise an on-site exhibition to display their creations starting from November 29, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.

“Indexing Fashions: Rethinking the Photographic Archive of the Museo Nazionale Romano through Fashion”

The third workshop, “Indexing Fashions: Rethinking the Photographic Archive of the Museo Nazionale Romano through Fashion”, led by Marco Pecorari, will take place at Palazzo Massimo (Largo di Villa Peretti 2) on November 28 and 29. It will explore the photographic archive of the Museo Nazionale Romano to reflect and rethink institutional practices of interpreting sculpture through fashion. Starting from a study of the existing cataloguing for the museum's works, students will be encouraged to develop new readings and catalogues that provide a cross-narrative of the works, responding to contemporary criteria. The results will be presented at Palazzo Massimo on November 29, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, as the concluding part of the educational activity.
