NABA is delighted to announce its participation in BookCity Milan 2023, celebrating the world of literature and the joy of reading. This prestigious event will take place in Milan from November 15 to 19 of, marking its twelfth annual occurrence with the theme “Tempo del sogno”. In alignment with the BookCity Universities' initiative, NABA will host two distinguished talks on November 16 at its Milan campus (via C. Darwin 20): "Femminismi contro", Talk curated by Visual Arts Department, and “Dal romanzo al film”, presented by Media Design and New Technologies Area.

“Femminismi contro”: a conversation transcending traditional boundaries

Starting at 10:30 AM in Classroom T 0.0, the "Femminismi contro" Talk, curated by Visual Arts Department, will see the participation of Marco Scotini (Visual Arts Department Head at NABA), alongside Elvira Vannini (art historian and NABA lecturer), Angela Maderna (revered art critic and historian), and Massimiliano Guareschi (author and NABA lecturer). The dialogue will delve into the critical examinations presented in the publication "Counter Feminisms. Artistic Practices and Gender Cartographies" (Geoarchivi Series, Meltemi Publisher), edited by Elvira Vannini. The text reconstitutes the "positional geographies" of the relationship between art and feminism across various latitudes and through different historical phases, beginning with the voices from the so-called Global South in a quest to transcend the traditional Western literature produced by white, hegemonic feminism. Feminist archives, often forgotten or suppressed, emerge as chosen instruments to rewrite these counter-narratives and to develop a gender cartography that encompasses the artistic constellations of the Third World (India, Pakistan, Asia, Latin America, and North Africa) and Eastern Europe.

Two performances will enrich the book presentation. Following an introduction by Ginevra Rutherford (NABA student and creator of the podcast “Pelo nell’uovo”), the first performance, titled “Coreografie del genere,” by NABA students Noah Agostini, Elisa Ceneri, and Barbara De Veteris will take place. This act will tackle themes of identity and self-representation, which have become pivotal in contemporary artistic practices, while also foregrounding the significance of the body subject in exploring concepts of time, aesthetics, and spectatorship. The second performance, “Dear Sisters…,” is a reading group featuring NABA students Martina Pumpel, Alessia Riva, Sofia Schartner, and Lucrezia Vimini, with a set display designed by Chiara Antonelli.

“Dal romanzo al film”: the synergy between literature and cinema

At 5:00 PM on November 16, in Classroom G 0.4, the second talk, “Dal romanzo al film”, will take place. Curated by Media Design and New Technologies Area, this session will investigate the trend of cinematic adaptations of contemporary literature over the past three decades. Notwithstanding the foundational work of Italian authors in the post-war period, modern novels have increasingly become the bedrock for narratives within the cinematic sphere. The panel, moderated by film critic and NABA lecturer Roberto Manassero, will feature Francesca Serafini, a renowned writer and screenwriter (co-author with Claudio Caligari and Giordano Meacci of “Non essere cattivo”), and Alessandro Bertante, Course Leader of the BA in Film and Animation in Milan and author of “Nina dei lupi” (La Nave di Teseo), a novel recently adapted into film by Antonio Pisu.

Both events are open to the public: free entrance subject to availability.
