Designing a spoon to change a city at Triennale Milano

On Wednesday July 15th at 6.30 pm, NABA will present, as part of Triennale Estate schedule, the second volume of the NABA Insights book series, “Designing a spoon to change a city” (published by Quodlibet), by Claudio Larcher, NABA Design Area Leader and Valentina Dalla Costa, journalist and NABA lecturer, with a contribution by Andrea Branzi.

The live talk will be introduced by Guido Tattoni, NABA Dean, who will be followed by Marco Sammicheli, Triennale Milano International Relations Chief Officer, and Italo Rota, architect and NABA Scientific Advisor, and by the authors presenting the issues of contemporary design as they rise from the pages of the book. Challenges, new scenarios, problems, changes in models, markets, and scales; from the real city to the digital one, from the value of the given to that – which easily beats it – of the object, to try to think about current themes dealing with contemporary design.

The publication is based on an idea by Claudio Larcher, who involved a group of Italian designers to climb up toward the Taramelli lodge, at an altitude of 6,712 feet, in the heart of the Dolomites. Designing a spoon to change a city is a reminder of Ernesto Nathan Rogers’s famous words, “from the spoon to the city”, the authors reverse the concept in “from the city to the spoon”: the small acts upon the big, the small scale influences the large scale.

Through the literary genre of the dialogue it was possible to return points of view and references, that are times opposing ones, of the designers who took part in the book. The result is a still image of what is happening today seen through the eyes of designers and NABA’s lecturers: Lorenzo De Rosa, Francesco Fusillo, Ernesto Iadevaia, Eugenia Morpurgo, Marcello Pirovano, Filippo Protasoni and Sara Ricciardi.

NABA Insights, curated by Guido Tattoni and Italo Rota, includes Marco Scotini, e.d., “Utopian Display. Geopolitiche Curating”.
