Who is a visual Designer?

From the smallest start-up to large international groups, anyone with a business also has the need to produce images and graphic identities for their communication. Visual Designers play a crucial role in defining and communicating brand identity or the concept behind a product launch campaign. Whether it’s the creation of a logo or the definition of an unmistakable layout, their responsibilities encompass everything related to graphic design in the digital environment.

What do Visual Designers do?

A professional Visual Designer is responsible for the creation of visual elements in line with clients’ requirements and guidelines defined by the communication team. Commercial messages, information and concepts are conveyed through visual output. Activities in which these professionals are involved include the graphic design of logos, images, icons, presentations and other visual elements to define a brand identity and speak effectively to its audience. In the web area, these professionals are in charge of designing the sites’ layout and their chromatic impact, creating or redefining fonts and images with an eye to users’ experience. Areas of specialisation can also include UX and UI design.

What skills do Visual Designers need?

Working closely with creative teams and communication and marketing departments requires a disposition for collaborative work as well as a solid set of technical skills.

  1. - Knowledge of design principles: understanding the fundamentals of composition, use of colour, typography, visual hierarchy and design theory.
  2. - Knowledge of software: mastering graphic design programmes such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch or Figma.

- Soft skills: creativity, visual thinking, aesthetic sensitivity, keeping up to date with the latest trends in visual design, communication skills to understand project requirements and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

How to become a Visual Designer?

Most of the technical skills defining the Visual Designer’s profile can be acquired through an educational pathway. The Three-year BA programme in Graphic Design and Art Direction at NABA offers tools to take the first steps in this professional field. Here, theoretical knowledge and practical skills are transferred which prepare students to the design of communication elements in the field of graphic design. From the study of form to the creation of an actual logo or typeface, emphasis is placed on aesthetic, strategic and technological considerations.
