The next decade will be characterised by increasingly powerful, invasive, widespread, differentiated technologies that, more importantly, will be active and necessary in the productive practice.

The purpose of this Area introduced in 2019, with its Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes, is to open a dialogue between students and professionals in the fields of: direction, screenwriting, photography direction, theory of arts and media, game design and game development, 2D and 3D animation and modelling, character design, sound editing and design, VFX, creative technology, interaction, UX design, digital and live performance.

The laboratories are the core of this Area, the meeting point for students, faculty and the most advanced media and creative technologies-based methods for the creation of complex and contemporary authorial and research projects. These works are targeted at the world of culture and corporate, for state-of-the-art professional development that can bring professional skills and authorship into the job market.

All Media Design and New Technologies Area courses adopted the Rules for Ethical Behaviour in the Audiovisual Field of Women in Film, Television & Media Italia.

Film and Animation

The BA is aimed at preparing artists and professionals in the field of audiovisual creations, in particular in the branch of cinema and in all the traditional and contemporary as well as future applications including their hybrid products.

Bachelor of Arts in

Creative Technologies

The BA explores the world of CGI and aims at growing professional figures in the fields of Game, VFX and 3D, introducing the students to the most innovative techniques: from virtual production to character design and animation, and development of videogames.

Master of Arts in

Creative Media Production

The MA explores the complexity of a world inquired by analogical and digital tools and lays the foundations for innovative artistic and expressive representations of reality through linear and non-linear audiovisual productions by the use of creative coding, human-computer interaction, visual and generative sound design.

Master of Arts in

Digital and Live Performance

Through practical experiences and theoretical courses, the MA provides students with the methodological skills for the development of processes and projects in the performative field, to refine their understanding of the reality that surrounds them and to work in the field of digital and live performance at a professional level.

Academic Master in

Screenwriting for Series

The Master intends to train professionals figures in the field of audio-visual screenwriting, who are capable of intercepting themes and narratives of a constantly evolving world for the development of serial projects of national and international relevance.

Luca Poncellini

Luca Poncellini is an architect and a designer with a PhD in the History of Architecture and City Planning. As a partner in the architecture office Cliostraat until 2009, he has curated projects and has lectured in Italy and in several countries throughout the world. His works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, at the Van Alen Institute in New York, at ETH in Zürich, at MAGA in Gallarate and at Triennale Milano. In 2008 he co-curated the retrospective exhibition Laszlo Hudec, in collaboration with the Hungarian Consulate in Shanghai. Since 2013 he has been the Course Leader of the MA in Interior Design. Between 2015 and 2019 directed the research lab and the project C-Park. Since 2019 he has been Design and Applied Arts Department Head.

Vincenzo Cuccia

Vincenzo Cuccia has a degree in Cultural Heritage from Università Statale di Milano and in Editing from the Milan Scuola Civica di Cinema e Nuovi Media. As part of his previous professional experience, he worked as an editor in advertising and television, where he collaborated with the RAI (Milan tv broadcast production area) on entertainment, culture and information channels. After working in the SAE Institute since 2009 as lecturer and then Academic Coordinator and Manager of the activity of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the Creative Media campuses of Milan, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Madrid, Paris and Stockholm, since 2017 he has been BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts Course Leader while from 2021 he is Media Design and New Technologies Area Leader.

VFX coordinator with 10+ years of experience in compositing, motion graphic design, and colour grading. Always aware of new technological developments in the audio-visual industry, he keeps updating and training, both as a DaVinci Resolve certified trainer or experimenting with Unreal and Houdini. Since 2015 he has engaged in the academic world, with experience as programme coordinator and lecturer, with teaching experiences both in Milan and Brussels. In 2022 he started to collaborate with NABA, first as lecturer and afterwards as course advisor leader. He has a passion for VFX and science fiction, as well as documentary and social commentary. He has also worked as film-editor of dozens of international film documentaries, including "Megunica” about the famous street-artist BLU, “Zanetti Story” about the Inter captain Javier Zanetti, and the award-winning “Bad Weather”.

Michele Aquila

After graduating in Architecture at the University of Florence, Michele Aquila becomes partner and project leader of Interaction Design Lab Srl, where he coordinates service and interaction design projects for clients in the public and private sector. From 2009 to 2010 he began his collaboration with NABA first as coordinator of the BA in Design and then as a lecturer. In 2011 he founded U10, a studio specializing in online publishing and new media. He later co-founded Tweetbook, an award-winning online service for publishing ebooks based on Twitter conversations. He has taught and held workshops in Italian and international institutions (Royal College of Arts, VCUarts Qatar, Kent State University Florence, Abadir) and was responsible for the programme of the Master in Interaction Design and of the Master in Service Design of Domus Academy from 2016 to 2022.

Francesca Staasch

Director and screenwriter, she graduated from the London Film School in 1997. She studied with director A. Kiarostami and script theorists R. McKee and K. Dancyger. Resident artist at the Cité Des Arts in Paris in 2001, after having made several short films, including “Monochrome”, in 2012 she directed her debut film “Happy Days Motel” produced by Rai Cinema. She has been a consultant for Rai and BBC and directed 12 episodes of the web series “The Zedef Chronicles”. Future projects include the two feature films "Tina" with the production company Rosamont and "Libera Fuori", produced by Thinkfull, and the comedy series "Stai Su!" with Lynn/Greenland, in addition to numerous collaborations with prominent screenwriters. She currently is BA in Film and Animation Advisor Leader at the NABA Campus in Rome.

Marco Secchi is a freelance game developer who graduated in Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan. He is currently lecturer of the BA in Creative Technologies and of the MA in Creative Media Production. He also mentors BA students in their final thesis project. In his spare time, he reads (a lot), plays (a little) and tries to practice Crossfit.

Antonella Cirigliano

She lives and works between Milan and Verbania. Graduated in Philosophy, her work focuses on theatrical research and performing arts on a professional level for over 20 years. Her artistic training began at the CRST - Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski - in Pontedera, since 1996 she has specialised in sensorial theatre techniques with the Colombian director and anthropologist Enrique Vargas and she has travelled all over the world participating in the most important European, Asian and South American festivals. She is director and curator of sensorial itineraries and Artistic Director of festivals related to the interaction between expressive practices. She is the founder and Artistic Leader of Fondazione CROSS and has produced numerous performing arts projects with the LIS LAB collective and as an independent artist. She also teaches Performative Techniques for Visual Arts at NABA where she directs research on contemporary languages and on the performing arts.
