On 17th January, an event organized in collaboration with Women in Film, Television & Media Italy (WIFTMI) will be held, featuring the screening of Nina Menkes' documentary “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” distributed by I Wonder Pictures on the IWONDERFULL platform. The screening is scheduled at the NABA Milano campus in Aula G 0.4, located at Via C. Darwin 20, starting at 5 PM. It will be followed by a discussion on the film, moderated by Maresa Lippolis (NABA Media Design and New Technologies area lecturer). Panelists include Cinzia Masotina (screenwriter, story editor and lecturer) and Adele Dell’Erario (Innovation Manager of the Italian Documentary Association Doc/it). The session will commence with introductions by Daniela Di Maio (WIFTMI board member) and Vincenzo Cuccia (Media Design and New Technologies, and Set Design Area Leader).

"Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power", in its first academic screening, is a film-essay on the relationship between cinematic language and the expression of patriarchal power throughout the history of cinema to the present day, and a representation of a gender gap in the audiovisual industry itself. The documentary, restricted to viewers under the age of 18, has been shown at major international film festivals (including Sundance, Berlinale, CPH:DOX, BFI-London, and IDFA) and uses nearly 200 clips, filmed from 1896 to the present, to demonstrate how the design of shots, camera movements, lighting, and even sound design have perpetuated sexist codes throughout cinematic history. At NABA, it will be shown in its original version with Italian subtitles, and the related talk will be simultaneously translated into English.

The collaboration with WIFTMI 

Women in Film, Television & Media Italy (WIFTMI) is an association dedicated to promoting gender equality in the audiovisual sector. It has introduced its own Code of Ethical Conduct, to which all NABA courses in the Media Design and New Technologies Area adhere to. The association also collaborates with NABA in the Z-PITCH Contest, now in its third edition, and is a partner of the Academic Master in Screenwriting for Series offered at the NABA campus in Rome, to support a free, creative, and gender-diverse approach in training future professionals in audiovisual writing.
