The BA provides students with the tools to interpret and participate in the complex reality of contemporary media. It focuses on the key aspects/main issues of the audiovisual production, in the increasingly hybrid environment of cinema, video games and animation, exploring language, history, writing, techniques of shooting, editing, and postproduction, 2D and 3D animations, direction of photography, sound design, game design and interactive multimedia installations.

The programme enables students to acquire basic knowledge and skills in the field and to undertake a specialising path in the subject of interest through a project-based and experiential didactic approach.
After the first year, students choose their specialisation, with specific and elective courses during the second and the third year and a last specialised semester.
FIRST YEAR
Introduces students to the basic tools to approach the audio-visual, animation and game design.
Students learn the skills necessary to undertake film projects, documentaries, tv and web series, video contents for web and communication, story-telling through moving images and contemporary videogame projects, through theoretical, project-based and lab teachings of history of cinema and video, multimedia dramaturgy, screenwriting foundations, linear audiovisuals, sound design foundations, multimedia languages, digital cultures, digital applications for art.
SECOND YEAR
Guides students towards further improvement in the field by choosing one of the programme specialisations (Filmmaking, Animation, Game Design) and through specialising studies in creative writing, direction of photography, digital animation techniques, new media aesthetics, interaction theories and techniques, direction, computer games, multimedia languages, multimedia design, project culture, digital applications for art.
Led by teachers through practical experiences, students learn how to develop complete projects in the different fields of application, from the concept to the economic, physical and time boundaries, and the requests of the client.
THIRD YEAR
Defines students knowledge and skills and provide the opportunity to independently and professionally manage the complete creative process for audio-visual, animation and game design projects, with regard to the contemporary professional context of production and distribution.
By the end of the programme, students develop a personal method and language through specialising teachings of direction, direction for video games, multimedia design, history of modern art, theory and methods of mass media, multimedia installations, phenomenology of the image, art semiotics, and didactic activities related to the thesis project, in its theoretical and project-based components.

It focuses on the topic of audiovisual productions for cinema, web, tv series, music videos as well as for social networks communication, providing students with the design tools to deal with the ideation, pre-production and post-production phases.
The specialisation aims to develop the students' theoretical and practical skills in the audiovisual design and production. Starting from the creative aspects – from concept to screenplay and development - students deal with all the technical phases of a professional project, from pre-production to direction, from cinematography to editing, post-production, and sound design. The path deepens the research on main themes, styles, technologies, and design typologies in the contemporary audiovisual scenario to train young authors, directors and professionals.
The student acquires the tools for the production of animation projects, from writing and art direction to stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation techniques.
The creation of characters and worlds, and the experimentation in the language field are the main topics of the BA. Starting from the learning of the different digital animation techniques, students have the possibility to enhance their capacities of story-telling and personal vision. The specialisation provides the tools for the production of a thesis project, using 2D animation, stop-motion, and basic skills of 3D animation, and enables students to gain a solid awareness of the animation practices for the artistic and professional field.
Explores the infinite possibilities of non-linear interactivity, through a thorough study of the game culture and the learning of the fundamental principles of game design.
The Game Design course guides students into the exploration of the infinite possibilities of audiovisual interactivity, devoting special attention to the videogame field and its contemporary evolutions.
Through a deep study of the game culture and learning the fundamental principles of game design and game production, students gain knowledge and skills on design and transmedia aspects of game, about interactive stories, concept design, game design documents and prototypes, together with the development of interactive visual novels, digital escape rooms, serious games, board games e game projects for VR.
Our Faculty
Luca Poncellini is an architect and a designer with a PhD in the History of Architecture and City Planning. As a partner in the architecture office Cliostraat until 2009, he has curated projects and has lectured in Italy and in several countries throughout the world. His works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, at the Van Alen Institute in New York, at ETH in Zürich, at MAGA in Gallarate and at Triennale Milano. In 2008 he co-curated the retrospective exhibition Laszlo Hudec, in collaboration with the Hungarian Consulate in Shanghai. Since 2013 he has been the Course Leader of the MA in Interior Design. Between 2015 and 2019 directed the research lab and the project C-Park. Since 2019 he has been Design and Applied Arts Department Head.
Vincenzo Cuccia has a degree in Cultural Heritage from Università Statale di Milano and in Editing from the Milan Scuola Civica di Cinema e Nuovi Media. As part of his previous professional experience, he worked as an editor in advertising and television, where he collaborated with the RAI (Milan tv broadcast production area) on entertainment, culture and information channels. After working in the SAE Institute since 2009 as lecturer and then Academic Coordinator and Manager of the activity of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the Creative Media campuses of Milan, Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Brussels, Madrid, Paris and Stockholm, since 2017 he has been BA in Media Design and Multimedia Arts Course Leader while from 2021 he is Media Design and New Technologies Area Leader.
Alessandro Bertante was born in Alessandria in 1969, he has always lived in Milan. He is author of the essays Re Nudo (2005, NDA) and Contro il ’68 (2007, Agenzia X). Among his novels: Al Diavul (2008, Marsilio), winner of Premio Chianti, Nina dei lupi (2011 Marsilio, 2019 nottetempo), Premio Strega finalist and winner of Premio Rieti, Estate Crudele (2013 Rizzoli), winner of Premio Margherita Hack and Gli ultimi ragazzi del secolo (Giunti 2016), winner of Premio Selezione Campiello.
