NABA's Communication and Graphic Design Area will participate in the first edition of the widespread festival BIG, Biennale Internazionale Grafica, with a series of initiatives. The festival, set to commence in Milan from May 23 to 26, is entirely dedicated to communication design and visual cultures and stems from the experiences of the 2022 Milano Graphic Festival. These are the NABA initiatives during the three days of the event.

NABA at BIG, Biennale Internazionale Grafica: the talk, the exhibition, and the workshop at the Milanese Campus of the Academy

Part of the Academy's initiatives at BIG, Biennale Internazionale Grafica, will be held at the NABA Campus in Milan (Via C. Darwin 20), beginning with the talk Starting from context and non-knowledge, a design attitude on May 23, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM in Room S 0.1. The event will feature designer Ruedi Baur, moderated by Vincenzo Estremo (PhD in Artistic Practice Course Leader), who will discuss how design cannot continue to blindly support a consumerist society in these times of crisis, war, and ecological uncertainty.

Also, on Thursday, May 23, from 5 PM, in Room C 0.4, the exhibition 15 anni di grandi Brand in NABA will be displayed, showcasing a selection of panels representing projects completed by students from the Academy's Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Art Direction, in collaboration with nationally and internationally renowned companies, associations, and enterprises, including Centri Porsche di Milano, San Benedetto, Venchi, Rolling Stone, and many others.

On May 23 and 24, the Campus will also host the workshop Type Design for Non – Type Designers, which is dedicated to designing and generating a variable font using the Glyphs font design software.

NABA at BIG, Biennale Internazionale Grafica: exhibitions, lectures, and talks at other venues

There are other numerous interventions by the NABA Communication and Graphic Design Area at BIG, Biennale Internazionale Grafica, especially within the Certosa District (via Giovanni da Udine 45, Milan). Here, from May 23 to 26, the exhibition Wayfinding e spazio pubblico will be held, showcasing wayfinding signage boards created by students of the Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Art Direction, guided by Luca Giulio Ferreccio (NABA lecturer) and Patrizia Moschella (Communication and Graphic Design Area Leader). The exhibition reveals how, despite a focus on inclusivity policies, there are evident design gaps addressed in the courses to generate new best practices in communication and accessibility.

On May 23, the exhibition Scuola del non Sapere will also take place, bringing together projects conducted by 30 different institutions, schools, and design groups from around the world, representing a small excerpt from a massive engagement with all the things we do not know, do not want to know, and have voluntarily or involuntarily forgotten.

On Friday, May 24, at 6:30 PM in the Certosa District, the lecture Breaking boundaries: A journey through Barnbrook's iconic works and collaborations will occur, during which Jonathan Barnbrook (British graphic designer, filmmaker, and typographer) will narrate over 35 years of his work, including collaborations with David Bowie, and discuss the potential for designers to influence societal change. He will also revisit the creation of his font "Mason", one of the most used of its era.

On May 24, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM, at the Università IULM (Via C. Bo 1, Milan), NABA will participate in L’eredità di Prometeo. The conference, curated by Franco Achilli, will discuss the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the training path of the next generation of Visual Designers.

Finally, returning to the Certosa District, on May 25 at 3 PM, the talk Segnali Fragili will be held with Luca Giulio Ferreccio (NABA lecturer) and Patrizia Moschella (Communication and Graphic Design Area Leader). Among the main causes of the poor accessibility of current signage systems is the generalist model referring to the average user: starting from a cultural genesis of exclusion practices, a paradigm shift in the design of inclusive wayfinding/signage systems will be proposed.
