NABA launches the competition “The Global Contemporary – The pictured collection”, the best 5 projects will receive a scholarship for the Academic Master in Contemporary Art Markets starting in September 2019.

BRIEF

As part of the competition, candidates are invited to act as art advisors and to submit a proposal for a collection of 15 works by artists of different generations and geographical origins. In recent years, contemporary art in the western world has opened its doors to different latitudes and times: from China to Africa, from Latin America to India. The art system has consequently become a complex fabric in which present day images intertwine with art from the past and with that of popular traditions. The German art critic Hans Belting describes these new cultural worlds with the expression: “The Global Contemporary”: from museums to the market, different iconographic traditions coexist with the international language of art and give shape to a new imagery and new forms of collecting. Large scale exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale or Documenta, international art fairs, such as Frieze, Art Basel and Miart, as well as auction houses with special sales, create a dialogue between modern masters and young contemporary talents, antique trade mingles with today’s artistic production and what was once called tribal art interacts on a par with western tradition. Mega galleries have offices in several continents and the languages and generations of their artists entwine.

Students are invited to submit a dossier containing 15 works, where contemporary art dialogues with works from different cultures and times. Consulting exhibition catalogues, auction houses and gallery websites, candidates are required to select a collection of works, which are to be described individually in a data sheet (author, technique, date, size, origin and price, where available) and write an introductory text presenting the collection and the reasons behind their choices.
